Spin Loft (Tee to Green)

  • Definition
    • The angle between the direction of the club head’s movement and the club face’s orientation at the time of maximum compression. That is, Spin Loft is approximately the angle between the Dynamic Loft and Attack Angle.
    • Spin Loft is actually the three-dimensional angle between the direction the club head is moving (both Club Path and Attack Angle) and the direction the club face is pointing (both Face Angle and Dynamic Loft).
  • The Use of Spin Loft
    • The Spin Rate of a shot is largely influenced by the Spin Loft. All else equal, a higher Spin Loft will result in a higher Spin Rate.
    • Controlling Spin Loft is therefore key to controlling Spin Rate.
    • Moreover, a higher Spin Loft will create a lower Smash Factor all else equal. Because of this fact, some refer to Spin Loft as “compression” – a lower Spin Loft creates greater compression and a lower Spin Rate.
    • Players and coaches use Spin Loft data to optimize launch conditions for various shots, ensuring the desired balance of distance and control.
    • Adjusting swing mechanics and equipment based on Spin Loft can help players achieve better shot performance, whether they need more spin for stopping power on approach shots or less spin for driving distance.
