Launch Direction (Putting)

  • Definition
    • The horizontal angle the golf ball takes off at relative to the target line and measured immediately after separation from the club face.
    • That is, Launch Direction is the initial direction the ball starts relative to the target line.
    • A positive Launch Direction indicates a ball that starts right of the target and vice versa.
  • The Use of Launch Direction 
    • Ensuring that the ball starts consistently on the intended Launch Direction is critical for improving accuracy and reducing strokes on the green.
    • Monitoring the Launch Direction provides immediate feedback on the putting stroke.
    • A Launch Direction of +/- 2 degrees will go in the hole at 5ft on a straight putt.
    • A Launch Direction of +/- 1 degree is required on a 10ft straight putt.
