Settings | Importance of Using Admin Windows Account

Run TPS on a dedicated Windows Administrator account to ensure reliable operation, stable hardware communication, and successful updates.

Running TPS (Trackman Performance Studio) on a Windows Administrator account is important because TPS and the Trackman services need system-level permissions that a standard user account simply doesn’t have. When those permissions are missing, you get instability, failed connections, or features that “randomly” stop working.

  1. Service control & background processes
    • TPS relies on multiple background services (Trackman services, network listeners, hardware interfaces).
    • Admin account:
Can start, stop, install, and update Windows services as needed.
    • Standard account:
Cannot fully control services → services may fail to start, crash, or not reconnect after sleep/reboot.
    • Result: TPS may open, but hardware won’t connect or data won’t stream reliably.
  2. Hardware & driver access
    • Trackman hardware communicates with the PC via drivers, USB/network interfaces, and low-level system calls.
    • Admin account:
Full permission to access device drivers, network adapters, and system ports.
    • Standard account:
Restricted hardware access → dropped connections, calibration issues, or device not detected.
    • This is especially critical during initial setup, firmware updates, and reconnections.
  3. File system permissions (ProgramData & install directories)
    • TPS writes and updates files in protected locations such as:
    • Program Files
    • ProgramData
    • System-level config and log directories
    • Admin account:
Can read/write/update config files, logs, databases, and licensing files.
    • Standard account:
Write access may be blocked → settings not saved, profiles lost, updates failing silently.
    • This often looks like “settings don’t stick” or “TPS resets every launch.”
  4. Automatic updates & licensing
    • TPS and Trackman components require elevated permissions to:
    • Install updates
    • Patch executables
    • Validate licenses at the system level
    • Admin account:
      Updates and licensing complete successfully.
    • Standard account:
Updates may fail or partially install → version mismatches, licensing errors, or launch failures.
  5. Network & firewall permissions
    • TPS communicates over local network interfaces and specific ports.
    • Admin account:
Can open required ports, create firewall exceptions, and manage network adapters.
    • Standard account:
Cannot modify firewall/network rules → TPS may not discover the Trackman unit or may lose connection.
