Projector | Black Bars When Using Duplicate Display Mode

Black bars appearing at the top and bottom / left and right of the projected image while the PC monitor displays correctly is a common issue when using Duplicate (Clone) display mode with an NVIDIA graphics card.

This occurs when the monitor and projector do not share the same native resolution or aspect ratio. In Duplicate mode, NVIDIA forces a common output resolution, which can result in letterboxing on one of the displays—typically the projector.

Set NVIDIA Scaling to Full-Screen

  1. Right-click on the desktop and open NVIDIA Control Panel
  2. Navigate to:
    • Display → Adjust desktop size and position
  3. At the top, select the projector display
  4. Under Scaling, select:
    • Full-screen
  5. Under Perform scaling on, select:
    • GPU
  6. Enable:
    • Override the scaling mode set by games and programs
  7. Click Apply.

The following image summarizes the steps to follow on the NVIDIA control panel:

This ensures the projector image fills the entire screen.
